June/July 2023 Island Trip – Day 2

One of my tenants is working on their French, In my book project, I found six small volumes in French and ask them if they’d like the books. They did! My father made duffle bags for sailing. I have two of them and thought my sailing tenants might enjoy using them. After making sure that there was zero pressure for them to accept the duffles, they did wholeheartedly. It feels really good to have my dad’s handmade sailing duffle bags land back on a sailboat after more than 40-years. They’re in perfect condition.

A lot of mowing happened in two hours. This is, in part, because the growth rate of the grass has slowed down considerably. It takes far less time to go over acreage that isn’t covered in three feet of lush meadow grass. I might be able to finish the job in one more session, and my next trip will likely see that last of the seasonal mowing for this year, aside from the field mowing that is now planned for August.

I spent hours pricing items for the estate sale. I think this was as close as I’ve come to understanding what ADD must be like. There are thousands of objects in the building, and it took everything I had to simply complete the pricing of everything on each table. There are so many rabbit holes to run down in that structure! My AN is going to stop by to help me get two dead water heaters into my truck (metal recycle!), and I’ll ask him for a reality check on the items I know nothing about. And, like, what’s a Ziplock of bolts/screws/springs worth? Or should I take it all to metal recycling…

In my soirée through the upper barn, I started going through the bins of things I’m not willing to let go of yet. Only three… But, this lead me to discover that rats had been inhabiting the sheets I’d covered furniture with. Poop everywhere. Not recent poop… It was dry, but fuck!!! There’s damage on family heirlooms, which I washed and dried. My pest guy has tried to reassure me again and again that rodents aren’t interested in the barns (actually pole buildings), and I’m going to gently correct his reality. Tomorrow.

Our knife sharpener stopped by late afternoon, changed out the mower blades (clucked at me for hitting the buried t-stake), and took our little trailer (Luna) knives , and the very dented mower blades for sharpening.

I spent an enjoyable hour+ with my neighbor to the east on her deck early in the evening. She’s sporting in impressive non-covid virus, so the deck was the right place to socially distance. She’s been at this yuck for a week, poor babe. We had a good visit.

My DH and I got in our three games of backgammon, and I took a rejuvenating drought shower. I’m feeling renewed.
