June/July 2023 Island Trip – Day 7

After staying up far too late last night, our day got going mid-morning. My DH cut the alder plank, that’s destined to be a bench in mom’s refurbed garden, in two. Our tenant, who LOVES working with wood, wants to take care of finishing the wood and attaching it to the frame. We decided not to patch up the sheetrock in the pump house. It doesn’t have to be pretty, just keep critters out. It’s also not at all a square hole, so better left for when there’s more time. The sweetest thing my DH did for me was to hang a flamingo hook on my side of the bedroom (pic to follow), and the burliest thing he did was load the two ex-water heaters into the back of the truck so I can drop them at metal recycling, along with a lot of other metal that’s ready to find new purpose, on the mainland on Friday.

Both the upper and lower barns are looking more trim and fit than we’ve ever seem them. There’s still a long way to go, particularly in the upper barn, and the progress is palpable and visual. It feels really good.

After dropping my DH off at the ferry, I picked up a 10’ 4×4 for dad’s garden. Evidently one the posts we had was too short to replace an original post dad put in 40+ years ago. After the lumber yard I made a swift hit at the grocery store and returned to the property. I managed to unload the 10’ 4×4 near where it needs to be installed, put my few groceries away, and then headed to my neighbor to the east for a visit. By the time I returned the sun had set below Stella’s slope and so I spent and hour and a half weeding. Good progress! And we’re at that time of year where what I remove won’t regrow for a number of months, giving me time to deploy landscape cloth and mulch, even if I don’t get it done this trip.

Dinner was a lovely little piece of Copper River salmon, teeny potatoes, and roasted cauliflower. Virtual backgammon games played with my Honey were, as always, a delight, and now it’s time to wind down.

Tomorrow is supposed to be cooler, which will make it easier to accomplish some landscaping tasks 🤞.
