August I 2023 Island Trip – Day 1
I arrived at the property around 2 this afternoon. It was 2:45 by the time the truck was empty, food put away, and awnings deployed on Stella. She was 89º went I walked in and is now a very pleasant 71º at 9:30 in the evening.
Trolling through the NW corner of the upper barn was cathartic. Asking myself if my children would ever want the items I was culling, after pondering whether I could really use the same items, reduced the furniture load to four pieces. There are type cases, oil lamps, a white oak basket, etc that are in the ‘keep stack,’ and yet the delta is positive in terms of sending pieces out to live their best life.
I spent time cleaning, pricing, and vacuuming. There’s more to do, and ever single bit done now helps make the go-live day easier.
It’s hot here. We’re the coolest place in the country, and in the full sun one sweats. After stirring the upper barn, I took a delicious cold shower (cold well water is not as cold as city water), and then walked to my east neighbor for a visit.
We caught up on lots of stuff. She had lovely advice about letting those who tend to make you crazy (some beach folk 😏). “Just observe them like you’re watching a movie.” There’s more to that quote, but I am taking this to heart. It’ll be part of keeping my peace ☮️ .
On my way back to Stella I ran into my gardening tenant. He is indefatigable in the face of meadow grasses that have infiltrating the perennial bed for decades, and has removed 90% of them. As I walked past the veggie garden and stopped to marvel, he joined me to share what was what. There’s a lot of food there. It’s seriously impressive! Pics to follow.
