August I 2023 Island Trip – Days 3 & 4
Day 3:
After much testing of the water system, including drawing water, directly from the wall, and through the supply pipe to the house, as it was being backwashed, and testing the flow rate in the house, my AN suddenly said, “Let’s change the filter on the well.“ The pressure problems suddenly went away! To date, we’ve only changed the well filter when the water starts smelling like sulfur. That hasn’t happened for five or six months now. So, we learned something new! Just because the water doesn’t smell like farts, doesn’t mean the filter isn’t full of other debris. Trying to clean the supply pipe wasn’t for naught. We did end up getting a certain amount of grit cleared out. We’re going to add an additional, finer, filter to the system in the pump room. We’re not sure if we solved all the mysteries, but having greater water pressure at the house makes for a happier water heater and gardening tenants.
Day 4:
There were two things to do today, at least that were on the list. The first was to meet with our pest control guy. He’s been servicing this property since my parents were here. We went over three of the buildings in question. The most delightful part was what the tenants thought were rodent droppings in an open shed, are actually bat droppings. We’re all groovy with bats!
The second, and most important thing on today’s list, was to have dinner with Tim. He took a bad fall two days ago, and has been somewhat out of sorts since. His motivation has taken a hit, and his short-term memory, usually spot on, has also suffered some. He is also unsure whether the fall has affected his mobility, or whether his mobility challenges caused the fall. We did have a nice evening, and he kept apologizing for inviting me over to cook my own dinner! His sense of humor is solidly intact!
I unearthed additional things in the upper barn to add to the sale. Small cabinet door frames with mirrors, wrapped up in newspaper, dated from 1979, and 1980. Clearly some thing my father discovered and thought would make a fun project… I am hoping someone else will feel the same way, 43 and 44 years later. I also went down to the consignment shop in town and extracted everything I had there left unsold. It feels like moving out of yet one more building. There are a couple of prints from the relatively famous local artist. They’ve been with the consignment shop for three years. I’m hoping they will find a new home, at a much reduced price, at the sale.
After returning from dinner, and setting up for a game of backgammon with my DH, I was stung by what looks like a small wasp. I don’t know where it was, or how it got into the trailer. It got me on the left side of my middle finger on my left hand. I don’t recall the last time I was stung by a yellow and black stripy bug. Wow, it sure does get your attention! I’ve had my finger on ice ever since, and Siri is proving to me what a crappy secretary she is! 😂
