July 2024 Island Trip – Day 9
The big mowing is finished. I managed to get the grasses between the plum, and the apple closest to Stella slayed. It was 3-5 feet tall and was a very slow process so at not to upset the mower. This would have been done some time ago except for: Rain! I left the darker green grass ‘islands.’ There are two of them and they sway in the wind and look like moving water.

After getting laundry under way, and retracting the big awning because the breeze had turned into more of a wind, I headed to town. The bank, lumber yard, and market. I needed cash to pay the knife sharpener, and chose and ordered paint from the lumber yard for the eaves and soffits. Their stock is low, so if they don’t get the base we need in to mix the paint before I head back, our GC will pick it up. Next up was the market to find a couple of greeting cards. This is the second market… It’s outside of town, and I am entertained as I realize that I’d rather take my chances finding greeting cards at the market, rather than go into town for a better selection!
On my way out of the market, a bunch of employees were gathered around one of their colleagues who had just collapsed on the floor. She was breathing, but unconscious. While they (all men 😏) fussed around her, I pulled out my phone and called 911, just as someone said to get a manager. The poor kid who checked her pulse was relieved when I said, “Hey honey, she’s breathing.” I stuck with the 911 operator, asked the employees questions the operator asked me, and thought to additionally ask if she had hit her head on the way down. She hadn’t. It was a slow collapse. Once the paramedics arrived, and said I could leave, it dawned on me that I didn’t hear anyone think to call this child’s parents. Hopefully that’s what the manager was doing. This is a summer job for her. She’s too young to drive.
I fussed about with cleaning a paint brush I’m done with, and spackel knife & tray (that was left gloppy by others 🙄), kept after the laundry, received our now dangerously sharp knives, and then went to consult with the tenant about timing for a) clearing the little bit of what’s on the deck and b) choosing a day for me to reseal the deck. I also helped her hang up a quilt on the wall, which looks stunning. With the help of our hand truck, I was able to clear the deck, and I’ll reseal it tomorrow morning. She left to pick up her husband, and I measured for siding on the south side of the drier shed. I then took measurements of the lower barn space so I can plan how to set it up! Nothing like a good drawing 😁.
I’m done doing for the day, and that feels pretty good.
