Devastating News

A childhood friend lost his house in the LA fire. We talked last night, and while he’s very scattered (who wouldn’t be), he’s also thinking about the future. When I suggested that he gets to start designing a house, he offered that he might not rebuild… Might move somewhere safer. On a deep level he’s thinking very clearly. Our community has rallied around him and raised a tidy sum of money. His fire insurance will house him for the next two years, and FEMA should kick in as well. He kept saying, “I never thought I’d be starting over at 65…” My DH reminded him that’s he’s very good at reinventing himself.

In worse news, we found out that our neighbor’s son passed away on Monday. I was worried the last two days when the cul de sac was full of cars mid-day. Worried about one of the parents. I never thought it could be one of the kids. He was in his early 30’s, and that’s all we know right now. Next week I’ll make them a dish from their homeland, and ask how I can support them. It’s all I know how to do. We’ve been neighbors for 25-years. My heart is shattered.

I feel a couple of quilts coming on.
