Happy Birthday, Mom

Mom would have been 91 today. I kinda like that her birthday fell on Easter this year. She encompassed everyone’s faiths, and their right to practice those faiths. She leaned towards Buddhism in her later years, which I understand more now than ever. I will never tire of the story of my Jewish mama flying her middle finger at the local school district and sending me to the local Catholic school. It would have Never crossed her mind to not send me because of her own religious upbringing. Never. Her only thought was, “What’s the right choice for my child.” I love her for that, among many other things 💜.

Today, on mom’s birthday, we took our grandson to brunch at my DH’s mom’s assisted living community. She was delighted to see him and marveled at how much he’d grown. We do too, everytime we see him! Upon returning home, a discovery was made… The Easter Bunny had stopped by! And then we colored Easter eggs the way mom taught me.

Mom’s Easter egg method results in beautiful multi-colored eggs. The secret is a little (3/4 tsp) vegetable oil in the dye, whipped with a teeny whisk as the egg is lowered into the dye. Let sit as long as you like, remove, wipe the oil off the eggs, choose a color to over-dye the egg with, repeat! I don’t mix red and green. Red+Green=Mud 😅
