Another measure as to just how much smoke and soot swirled in the air of this wee house for decades is the picture below:

It took multiple passes with both undiluted cleaners to find the wood grain. A perfectly good tiling sponge and rag were ruined in the process. The oils won’t rinse out of either. I’m going to try oven cleaner, the McGiver of cleaning products, next.
