April 2026 Island Trip – Day 1

I arrived at the property mid-afternoon having taken a 1:30 boat. A stop in town to replace my sunglasses, whose left frame spontaneously broke as I removed them from my face while arriving at the toll both, delayed me another 20-minutes. I also picked up a container of ‘dry shampoo.’ This last week the Islands lost power for an entire day due to a car accident on the mainland. Or was it a transformer failure? Both were accused with no resolution as to which was the actual culprit. Our power here is fragile to say the least. Anyway, no power, no water, so I wanted to make sure that in the event of a protracted power outage that I had the means to clean my hair. I also brought up two packages of ‘body wipes’ left over from my surgery when I was forbidden to immerse myself in water. Between the two of these products I think I can live with myself for a week without power 😂. And yes, we do have stored emergency water

Almost the first thing I did, after unloading the truck and turning on Stella’s fridge, was to hop on the mower and slay grass around Stella and her meadow. It struck me that it was better to deal with the mowing first, and then trot out the satellite dish rather than the other way around, which would have me managing the very expensive proprietary cord attached to the dish in order to mow around it.

As described in my last post, when we were here, Stella’s couch is now at the upholster’s. I’ll post a pic of what the absence of the couch looks like, in daylight. I have a lot of cleaning to do… 27-years of dust on the battery boxes… 😳

And tomorrow, ‘while the weather are good’ (thems song lyrics!) I’ll mow the exuberant grass all over the property. I’ll also get in touch with the landscaper who’s taken care of mowing in concert with me, and hope to get them back on board for the season.

One thing I did not expect was the rest of the gravel under the lower barn overhang was all raked out! We’re talking maybe 2-yards. When asked, I told our general contractor, “Naw,’ mainly because I knew the bill was growing, and me and my DH could handle it. They did it anyway. 💜 Love these guys.
