Glazing

It was a lot of hard work, but the glazing of my father’s final work (though we don’t know when he actually threw these pieces) is complete. I found these pieces in three places: In a kiln at my folk’s house 2.5 blocks from here, in cardboard boxes on the Island, and the big pieces were in the lower barn’s ceramic studio. The big pieces were clearly the most recently made (most of 25-years ago now). We worked on the last big piece today. It was one of two ‘green’ pieces. I glazed the interior. Sadly it cracked at some point during the afternoon. Our friend, who like my father has a MFA in ceramics, can only think that bringing it outside, adding glaze (think water) and then a breeze was its demise 😢. There’s no point firing it. We’ll bring it home and nestle into the garden somewhere. It can slowly return from whence it came. We have three similar pieces we fired 8ish years ago that made it through the glaze/fire process. I am thankful.

The piece is about 30” long x 27” wide x 18” tall. The crack formed in the middle of the long side, top to bottom, where the sun is shining.

We used four different glazes today plus a white glaze for the inside of some of the vessels.

Next up is loading the kiln and hopefully firing soon thereafter… I no longer have any expectation that I’ll be bringing this work to the Island for the gathering. I have to be glad to be getting it done.
