May 2018 Island Trip Day Five
Today started early, after yesterday ending late. My DH needed to get up at 6 in order to put the rest of his gear in the truck, as well as a few items for me, eat some breakfast, and get to the ferry. I spent the early part of the day bribing the toilet with […]
May 2018 Island Trip Day Four
Today we: Slept in for the first time in a while! Defrosted and emptied the remaining jars of broth, salsa and strawberry/rhubarb sauce that mom had made. This is all in service of emptying the fridge/freezer. The salsa and fruit sauce went deep into a field for the birds. Enjoyed visits from the neighbor below […]
May 2018 Island Trip Day Three
Today was amazingly productive. I/we: Procured my husband’s return ferry reservation online at 7AM, on the dot. Our ferry run releases tiers of space on a schedule, the last release being at 7AM two days before the boat sails. At 7AM this morning my DH was on his was to catch the boat to come […]
May 2018 Island Trip Day Two
The house is essentially 85% deconstructed, and 75% packed. It’s slippery to wrap my head around because items are going to eight different places. Items being stored are packed with keen precision, items going to mom’s apartment more casually so, and things going to charity are set in a box. It’s at the point where […]
Expired Food…
Around my mother’s homes, expired food is similar to expired medication in that you will always, always find more. Last night I found a Pad Thai Noodle Kit with a November 2005 expiration date on it.
May 2018 Island Trip Day One
A fire engine pulling out, as I left our neighborhood, stalled my timing this morning (no grudge!). Then every light on the road from our interstate highway to the town that hosts the ferry terminal was red. I made it to the dock with 6 minutes to spare before losing my reservation. That’s a tad […]
Dentist Three
Mom did really well at the dentist today. She didn’t need me once during the two hours she was in the chair, nor did she twig to the fact they prepped for a second crown. Next appointment is in a month.
Carpenter!
Today the finish carpenter is: Installing the bathroom cabinet doors that my father made 15-20 years ago. Maybe longer. Will repurpose the old kitchen cabinet doors for the kitchen sink cabinets that my father made at least 20 years ago. Think about that… My father made all new lower cabinets for the kitchen AND kept […]
Gentle Deception, Confabulation, and Anger
While I don’t consider gentle deception lying to my mom, and it doesn’t give me moral pause, it doesn’t feel right either. It’s both because I’m a straight forward person, and telling my mother what’s easiest for her to hear, rather than what real, simply goes against my grain. I’m unable to shake this feeling. […]
Voting-Follow Up
I called the Island County Election office today, anonymously, and spelled out the challenge of three Counties and dementia. It turns out I can’t sign the return postcard as mom’s DPOA with this arm of the government. The only way to send the card back to the Elections office is if mom signs it. That’s […]
