Gimpy Update
With only the night brace, mom has improved to the point where she’s asked my daughter to source a cane. I’m relieved she’s feeling so much better, and even more excited that mom is willing to use a cane after poo-pooing the idea to the doctor. PT starts next week.
Doing Better After One Night!
Thursday 10/18/17 Evidently the night brace mom is wearing, after just one night, is helping. She, of course, was found walking to breakfast both wearing the brace, and using the light weight wheelchair as a walker… A dangerous combo, as the brace keeps her ankle at a 90 degree angle. When my daughter reminded mom […]
October Island Visit – Day Five
The wind went from steady to whistling somewhere during the 5AM hour. From then on dozing was as good as at it got. I rose at 7:15, after attempts at ignoring my alarm, and got going. Leaving the Island property is involved, particularly as the weather starts cooling off. “Clearing” each room works best for […]
October Island Visit – Day Four
Today: My old bedroom’s paint job was completed, and the louvered closet doors, which I took down and scrubbed soot, dust and spider webs off in the rain, were reinstalled. The furniture is back in place. It looks pretty respectable, particularly now that the somewhat smoke stained (but clean) curtains hang next to newly white […]
October Island Visit – Day Three
Today has been busy (duh). Starting fairly early, I got the next section of my old bedroom washed down. By the end of the day, I’d painted that section and washed the remainder of the room, which is now drying under the supervision of an oscillating fan. This room, mom’s office for years, is being […]
Ultra Sound
The ultra sound is negative for blood clots. I didn’t know that’s what they were looking for. It’s just as well. I’d have been worried for 24 hours. The doctor called to let me know, and I tuned him up a little on mom, and the timing of the series of events. He thinks, no […]
Cabinet Tops
Another measure as to just how much smoke and soot swirled in the air of this wee house for decades is the picture below: It took multiple passes with both undiluted cleaners to find the wood grain. A perfectly good tiling sponge and rag were ruined in the process. The oils won’t rinse out of […]
Podiatrist Visit
Mom has insertional Achilles tendonitis. My brief research reveals this is caused by a degeneration of the Achilles tendon. The immediate prescription is physical therapy (PT) and a night brace. I am suspending my anxiety regarding the definition of PT, and how much of my involvement may be required for the moment. I hope there […]
October Island Visit – Day Two
It’s been a weird day. Other than my phone’s battery, uncharacteristically, running out overnight, and causing me to oversleep, it doesn’t feel like I’ve wasted time, yet so little actually got done. Could be the theme of the trip! After breakfast, I found my courage and lit the oil stove. Washing down the big wall […]
Washing Walls
It is a wonder that both of my parents did not succumb to emphysema. The soot on my old bedroom walls, from decades of the chimney not drawing properly, is endless. I’m puzzled why the area furthest from the fireplace is worse than the rest of the house.
