Periodicals

As mom’s periodicals come up for renewal I’m making some sad choices to let go of a few of the deeply political publications. She can’t hold a conversation about anything remotely political, and has even stopped staying what an asshole the POTUS is (something she did when he was campaigning). She subscribes to a number […]

Dental Appointment

I spent last week, off and on, lining up a ride for mom to get to her dental appointment and back, this coming Tuesday. It started with: The dental office calling to tell ME that the community didn’t have a ride for mom, not only for her Tuesday appointment, but for any of six other […]

Farmer’s Market

This evening, via email, I found out that our local farmer’s market has dismantled, come undone, is no more. For years I have coordinated our county’s Master Gardener information booth at our farmer’s markets. One one hand, I am relieved, but only for myself. I hit burnout about two years ago. Not with anything to […]

Island House Improvements

Today the new heat pump was hooked up at the Island house. The tenants, being European, are stoked to have this standard-to-them, ultra-efficient technology as part of the house’s systems. It’s cheaper to operate than any other fuel source unless you can keep yourself in free wood. But y’all know how I feel about open […]

Happy New Year!

Yeah, a few days late, but the sentiment is there. My only New Year’s resolutions are to ‘chill,’ adopt a daily flow of ‘work, art, garden (yeah, domestic tasks will tuck in there somewhere, but let’s get the important things done first),’ and re-engage with my anti-inflammatory diet (on Monday). Since damaging my peroneal nerve, […]

New Computer

After at least 2-years of cuss-laced frustration, while fighting with what is now my 8.5-year old Toshiba laptop, last night with the help of my daughter’s BF, I made the jump to a fancy-pants MacBook Pro. After 32-years a PC user, there’s gonna be a steep learning curve, tempered by about 8-years of iPhone, and […]

Disowned

Jane disowned me at the conclusion of two conversations we had today. She told me I was no longer part of the family, and she “meant it!” I was accused of having ‘all the answers,’ refusing to rescue her, and the cause of her predicament. My husband listened in disbelief. Jane escalated, and ultimately hung […]

Utilities

The last of the utilities for the Island have been cancelled, or in the case of mom’s ISP, reduced to simply hosting her email addresses for the time being. It’s wasn’t easy to shut down a phone number that was set up in 1979, more than 39.5 years ago.

Christmas with Mom and Jane

Let me start by saying Christmas was great. We spent time with half of our kids, their BF and husband, the grandson, the BF’s daughter and mom, and my mom and Jane. Dinner was amazing, Gift exchange was fun, particularly watching the kids, and the gathering wasn’t at my house. 😜 Bless my daughter’s BF […]

Didn’t Attend

We didn’t attend the Christmas dinner this evening at mom’s community. It’s the first major event I haven’t gone to. While on one hand it feels shitty, not taking the risk of another blow-out with my mother feels pretty OK. One cannot set boundaries with a demented person, so you have to set those boundaries […]
