And We’re Off!!

The structural work for the kitchen remodel started today! The ceiling and a section of wall downstairs is opened up in order to accept a large beam. Some plumbing has to be rerouted. Monday the slab gets cut and the footing dug. It was hard to stay in the background of all the work! Sure, […]

Family Catch-up

My cousin called this morning. We talked about the in-process auction whose goal it is to sell off his father’s (my uncle’s) worldly goods. My DH and I looked at all 543 lots last night. There are things I want and will bid on. Without going into the deep depths of that piece of the […]

Fast Work

The City issued our building permit in two (2!) days 😳!! The time estimate was 6-8 weeks. Of course, they aren’t open to the public on Fridays, so I picked it up today before a meeting with the contractor and his project manager. We’re official in the eyes of the law!!

Periodicals

After trying more than a year, I finally found a home for my parent’s large collection of three different fine arts periodicals. No, not an academic institution, but a local artist mom who wants to wander through their pages, and then use them with her kids to make art. A fitting end somehow, particularly as […]

Milestone!

I submitted everything required for the city to start their permit review on our kitchen remodel project. I may goof off tomorrow!

IRS

The IRS has issued a 1099 for $27.00 of interest income for my mom for 2021. After a short and very entertaining conversation with my CPA (“You tried to call them? Hahahahahahahahaha!”), I will post a letter to them tomorrow asking: Do I amend mom’s 2020 return? The 1099 is for 2021. Do I file […]

Archives – Finished

Mom’s archives are on their way to the Getty. It’s an odd relief, both that all that material is heading somewhere that will take care of it, and make it available to others, and that it’s not taking up space in our house anymore. Don’t take that wrong… It’s been good to go through it, […]

A Last Chat

With my cousin’s help, I was able to have a very brief chat with my uncle early yesterday evening. He sounded groggy, but I could understand most of what he said; There comes a time when it’s time to let go. How’s your family? I love you. He fell asleep within three minutes. He passed […]

An Example of Family Secrecy

My cousin wrote to me today. The one who doesn’t get along at all well with his dad. He let me know his dad confessed to his brother, only two weeks ago, that he does indeed have leukemia, and not anemia. The entire time this has been going on I’ve been saying, “This sure sounds […]

My Other Uncle

My cousin called me today to tell me his dad, my dad’s brother, decided to start hospice care over the weekend. He’s been ill for some time, requiring transfusions twice a week for a long time. Making the switch to hospice care means no more life-maintaining (transfusions) measures. Without them my uncle will fade very […]
